About

The objective

Welcome to Snowboard Mountaineer! Snowboard Mountaineer is a story of my journey snowboard mountaineering in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  This is my soul space where I share my experiences and reflections through the breadcrumbs of that journey.

I have been on planks since the age of four, learning to ski in Carbondale, CO and Aspen, CO.  The backcountry has unbelievable rewards and opportunity if you are willing to free that heel.  I believe that it should be done in a responsible and educated way.  I offer an insight to technical tips, gear modifications, trip reports, and news and updates in the genre of backcountry snowboarding and skiing.  I bring science, grit and creativity together.

I am committed to making these ideas available to everyone, regardless of location, background, or socioeconomic status.  My hope is that people who take pride in their craft, people who have a passion for adventure, and people who have a desire to contribute and create will come here to share in my journey, challenge my ideas, and offer their own thoughts about experiencing adventure that matters.

The best thing a human being can do is to help another human being know more.”

—Charlie Munger

The fact is, no one ever comes back from the mountains the same.  Every time a summit is achieved, or fresh tracks are had, a person comes back changed by the experience.  I believe that the world would be a better place if we had more people who were athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists.  In other words, I believe that the world would be a better place if we had more people who were putting their sweat, their work, and their vision out into the world.

I’m an advocate for avalanche education and awareness.  I am a qualified AIARE Level 1 Instructor, and Know Before You Go Instructor for Colorado.  I am also an ambassador for The Avalanche Project, a collaboration across the industry to eliminate avalanche fatalities. Climate change is central and important to me and has led me back to the University of Colorado.  I have witnessed the impacts of climate change through snow study in the Rocky Mountains.  It’s worth protecting, it’s my way of life.  For that reason I also support Protect Our Winters.

My work covers a variety of topics in the genre of backcountry snowboarding.  I stick to a core set of values in the backcountry.  I believe that mastering your habits in the backcountry is at the core of having awesome adventures, and experiencing life to the fullest.  I believe that small choices and tiny habits shape our lives, exceptionally so in the outdoors.  The central idea that ties it all together is simple. If you can master your habits, you can master your life.
