These are various pictures of several dates of RMNP from mid-January through the beginning of February prior to the current storm cycle. I have been up to the Loche Vale area several times, and the Loche is beginning to fill in nicely. I’m sure with the last storm adding nearly two feet to the area we are really starting to fill in for spring conditions.
Otis Couloir has amazing snow – and that was before the current set of storms. Needless to say, just like the Dragontail there is heavy avalanche danger right now until we get some consolidation going on.
Dream Chutes is awesome dropping in to Emerald Lake – again though, we need another round of consolidation.
There is an incredibly weak layer hibernating down there. I know I am preaching to the choir, but be very aware of terrain traps and route finding. The snowpack is extremely ‘ticky’ in all areas. I should have some trip reports up within the next few weeks as the best part of the season gets under way. Stay safe out there!
